Smith played on the Redskins when the homophobic Vince Lombardi was the coach. Turns out Lombardi had a gay brother and made clear that “discrimination would not be tolerated in his locker room.”
This is the late 60’s and early 70’s when this took place so it was a very different time. If you’re a football fan you should be watching “A Football Life” because they are all incredibly interesting and very well put together.

The whole special, which you can watch parts of here, was fascinating. It’s particularly relevant in light of Aaron Rodgers’ recent scandal, Chris Kluwe’s allegations that homophobia led to his firing, and that to this day, there is no out NFL player. You can be damn sure there are gay ones, though.
